Bill Copland's Account of Day 9 Part 2
Monday, Day 9 Part 2 .................
We arrived a few minutes early, but we didn't have to worry about missing anything.
The truck dispatcher, and essentially, the leader of the whole trip, Dave Zsido, told the Capitol
Forest service, if we couldn't drive our trucks and buses there, then they would have to wait
until EVERYONE arrived before any ceremony started. We brought the tree down, and
we would all be there for the service, if they tried to start with out everyone being
there, he would whip out his chain saw and cut the tree.
Now ............ would he have really done that?
If you know Dave, like we do, you would not want to take the chance.
Shortly after 10am, when it was verified that we were all present, Fred Beauchamp,
the truck driver who brought the last tree from Vermont, in 1994 pulled up to the Capitol.
While the TV Crews stood across the street filming, they cut away the
decorative lights, and the burlap.
It took us 4 hours to string those lights, and 40 seconds for them to cut
them off, but they had served the purpose well.
The crane moved in, and for the first time in 10 days, the tree was off the truck.
