My name is Howard J. Woods, Jr. My father, Howard James Woods, was a member of the original crew on board the USS Bennington.
I recently found your web page and was pleased to see the photo submitted by Janice Sansone Rathburn, the daughter of Vic Sansone.
This photo is titled "Flight Deck Crew USS Bennington 1945."
I can provide you some additional information about the photo.
First, this is a group photo of the V-1-G Unit of the Air Department.
As I am sure you know, this unit was responsible for servicing planes with fuels, oils and fluids.
The commanding officer was Anthony (Tony) Galletta (Lt. jg), who I presume is pictured center front row.
I can identify three people in the photo, my father (AMM3c, USNR) and Sam Samartano (S1c, USNR) and Mike Radzick (S1c, USNR).
I have annotated a copy of the photo to identify these three servicemen. You will find this attached.

Subject: SAM SAMARTANO
Hi. just went on the Bennington web site , and saw the pics from Sansone and just to inform you.... the person identified as Sam Samartano is incorrect. I am the son of Anthony (SAM) Samartano and that is not him........ sorry. He's retired yrs ago from N.Y.C. health dept. and is happily enjoying his later years with my mom ( they celebrated thier 50 th anniv april 03 ) 4 children.. 2boys ,2 girls & grandchildren of course.
