Dear Lonnie,
I was in Vermont yesterday on business and had the chance to pass through Bennington. Bill Copeland's photos of the ship's bell, posted on your web site, drew me there so I could see it for myself. There is a white marble screen behind the bell. The front side is inscribed simply "USS Bennington." The back side of the screen has a plaque giving a history of the ship (and a reference to her predecessor the Gunboat Bennington). I have attached a photo of the plaque for your enjoyment and use. I have also attached a photo of the bell and screen from a different angle than those posted on the web page so you can see the inscription on the marble screen.
