If you were sitting home on a Wed. night in 1956 and 57, and turned on your television at 8 PM on your local CBS station, you would have seen............................
Yep, the USS Bennington sailing across your screen!* Every Wed. Night for 2 years.
The Weekly TV show was "Navy Log" a 30 minute show telling different dramatic stories taking place in the Navy. (Sort of like, JAG, only with different stars every week.)
The Bennington was only in the opening scenes.
* Well, you might also have seen Jim Brusa, if you looked AWFUL CLOSE, in Jim's own words:
"I'm the sixth one down on the outside line of the O on the Navy Log."

They had a program on Navy Log about operation mariner and it brought back old memories. I was on watch in flag plot while Admiral Goodwin and Admiral Combs were discussing what to do with all the planes in the air and us in the middle of a fog bank. The decision was made to send the planes south to the sub Redfin and turn operational control of them to the sub. Luckily the fog lifted and the order was never executed. We ended up with planes from three different carriers. What was strange was that Admiral Goodwin had the aerologist up before flight quarters and he said the weather was going to be clear. I can just see all those planes ditching and the sub picking them up one at a time. Somebody's butt would have been hanging from the yardarm for that one.
