USS Bennington Under the Manhattan Bridge
After Boiler Explosion Repair
July 1953
Lonnie,
Here are the photos I showed you at the Rhode Island reunion (2007).
The ship is moving from the New York shipyard to Bayonne, New York,
under the Manhattan Bridge (the Brooklyn Bridge is to our stern).
This is after completion of repairs to steam piping
which failed during our shakedown cruise at "Gitmo" in 1953.
Note that the mast does NOT show on top of the island.
It has been removed to clear the bridges.
Two of the radar antennas can be seen on the flight deck.
One near the motor launch forward and one just aft of the island.
