Shellbacks paid particular attention to pollywogs with brown shoes, since these were marines, chief petty officers or officers. No one was exempt from the initiation, from the ship's commanding officer on down. Any pollywog could be pulled out of line and taken to special areas for further attention. No single pollywog was allowed to complete the initiation process until all shellbacks were through with him.
