MERCY SHIP BENNINGTON
DUE TODAY Dec 30, 1964

The Long Beach based aircraft carrier USS BENNINGTON, dispatched last week on a mercy mission off the flooded Northern California coast, and is scheduled to arrive home at 9:45 this morning. She is to tie up at Pier E, Berth 125.

The carrier's helicopters will remain at Eureka "as long as needed."

It was from the BENNINGTON's deck last Saturday that four area men departed on an aerial photo reconnaissance mission that ended when their helicopter crashed, killing three.

The victims were Alonzo A. Slaughter, 31, photographer's mate 1/c, Marine 1st Lt. William L. Arbogast, 26, and Cpl. Joseph W. Brinkley, 23. The survivor, arriving today aboard the BENNINGTON, is Marine Captain, Richard Gleason, 33. He reportedly is steadily improving from his injuries.
