Hi Lonnie and Joe,
I just discovered the Bennington while surfing the web while at
work, thought I'd add my two cents worth.

I enlisted in the Navy in 1957 and reported aboard the Bennington in
1958 after a year in Adak, Alaska. I was 18 at the time and heard a lot
of interesting stories about the Australia trip. I had just made AE3,
aviation electrician mate, when I was put in charge of the letter "I" as
in Arizona as the Bennington passed in front of the sunken Arizona at
Perl Harbor. And yes I remember the number 3 elevator falling off
during the typhoon near Japan. I worked in the V3 division pushing
planes around the hanger deck for 2 years before I went to the V6
division where I was discharged in November 1959 while the Bennington
was in dry dock at the San Francisco Naval Shipyards.

Regards,
Ronald Hall
