Thought I would drop you a line and say hello. I served onboard USS BENNINGTON (CVS-20) from 1961 through 1965 attached to
Commander, Anti-Submarine Air Group FIFTY-NINE as a young seaman. The Air Group Commander than was a mustang commander named
Paul Spear and the operations officer was named Pete Kluger. I was a yeoman striker than when making rate was very difficult and a BM3 was
like God. We made a couple of westpac cruises during this period. It was when the Navy was made of real men who went to sea and did what
they had to do. I ultimately retired in 1985 after 20 years service, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam as a River Parol Boat sailor and the
remainder of my career was spent onboard submarines.
I am interested in getting a re-produced photograph of the BENNINGTON if any are available. I still have the patch for CVSG-59 somewhere,
probably on an old jacket. If I ever get a scanner, I can send it to you if you are interested.
Drop me a line when you get a chance. It's always nice to talk with sailors who remember the old Navy and how it was.
