Now Days -

For your information- most of the bars in our old stomping grounds now have signs outside which say, "Japanese Only" and if you enter, you will be politely asked to leave.

Not so long ago I was walking on the streets of Sagami Osuka (atsugi Naval Air Station) and found only a couple of places to have a beer (expensive) and no taxi driver would give me a ride. One in particular just didn't drive by. He was parked and he rolled up his window and pretended that he was asleep and no amount of tapping on his window would get him to open the door for me and give me a lift.

I will say this- It was raining like crazy the next day and I was in Yamato (outside the back gate of Atsugi) and I was picked up by a very kind older man who gave me a lift to Sagami Osuka and spoke very highly of Americans and so forth.

A country of contrasts, but during the 60's, absolutely a great place to be.
